Before COVID 19 pandemic, it had been the biggest public health crisis in the US, killing well more than 50,000 people via overdose.

Jalal et al. showed that the overdose crisis has been brewing over a long time, showing an exponential growth since 70s and 80s. (jalal2018changing)
