Performed semi-structured interviews with 56 moderators of online communities (Twitter, Reddit, Facebook).
A moderator becomes a moderator usually through one of the following pathways.
- Personal connection
- Recognized from other moderating experience
- stand-out member of the community
- Availability (at important times of day)
- Volunteering
It argues that the formal education of new moderators was strikingly rare, which probably means that the selection of a new moderator may be largely driven by the normative behaviors of the candidates.
