Zettelkasten

One of the Ideas of connected ideas, usually referring to the implementation by Niklas Luhmann.

What are the differences between the Zettelkasten system and a Wiki? Would Niklas Luhmann have used a wiki if it was available? Both ideas are focused on making connections. Both use the similar metaphors such as “gardening”.

A review of Luhmann’s original article1 highlights the fact that Luhmann spent more time working on notes than writing all of his articles and books. The Zettelkasten or any similar note taking methods are not magic bullets. They require endless thinking and tweaking with notes.

There are lots of explanation of the methods on the web, but it’s rare to find explanation that show actual working examples. http://gordonbrander.com/pattern/ may be one.

This article may be one of the most comprehensive explanations about the method: https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/NfdHG6oHBJ8Qxc26s/the-zettelkasten-method-1
